My first trip to sea was on the Aureol as a steward. Lovely ship.

Hi guys, was takoradi the port where you had to navigate the river and anchor in a basin to load logs. can remember being in such a place on the Cochran, ED's and going ashore in one of the taxi canoes. in the early hours after the usual beer, women and what ever, we decided to steal on of the canoes to get back to the ship, only to discover after we jumped in and pushed off the owner was sleeping in it,
    regards, stan

1970 would have been the last times 'Aureol' sailed from Liverpool. She transferred to Southampton shortly afterwards. Eventually sold in 1974.

My understanding is that 'Aureol' was sold 'lock stock & barrel' when sold to the Marianna Shipping and Trading company in early 1975. She was utilsed as an accommodation ship in Saudi for 15 years before being laid up in good condition at Piraeus. She was kept with all her inventory and maintained for another 11 years. When she was due to go to Alang for scrapping in 2001....some ex Ocean Fleets seastaff were able to acquire some of the furniture and fittings - and inventory which were still Elder Dempster equipment.

It was early 1972 that she transferred to Southampton. She ran the West African Mailboat service from Liverpool on her own for over three years after the 'Apapa' was sold to a Hong Kong company in November 1968.
