    Default Chuscal

I was on the Chuscal when she lost five men in a storm. Its a day I will never forget. The following sea was too big to try to turn the ship around.Big decision for the Captain at the time.I felt so sorry for him.You could see how alone he was. The rest of us had each others company. The Chuscal was a good ship to be on.We were alll treated fairly. That wasn't always the way. Some companies were very tough.Overall, I have good memories of my time on the Chuscal.

Default 12th April 1966 SS Chuscal

    Hi Michael

I have just come aboard your fine site and I am so pleased to of read your post.
My name is Kevin Smith and my Dad was Michael Sydney Smith. I was four when I lost him and I lost my Mum at an early age as well.
I have never been able to get any information about my Dad, his ship (Chuscal) or that day.
I know that there is a memorial plaque and I have seen a photo of the plaque but I do not know where it is now?
Do you have any photos of my Dad or your Ship anything at all really?
I was a Sea Cadet and bound to follow my Fathers footsteps and join the Royal Navy back in 1981. I ended up joining the Army Royal Engineers and served for just over ten years.
My children are now starting to ask questions about their Grandad so it would be nice to have something to tell them. I do hope you can help.

    Regards
    Kevin

Welcome aboard Wendy.I hope you find someone who remembers your Dad.
That was a very sad tragic incident you mentioned about the CHUSCAL.
Just one example of seafarers being called upon to 'do their expected duty',...and next minute they've been taken.....a great tragedy for their families-their loved ones never came home and,a very sad loss for their shipmates, imagine the feelings of those on board, who would have to continue to sail with the vessel home, leaving behind their shipmates...
Seafaring was,and still is a very dangerous profession.Hardly any of us realised it at the time,we just knew we loved the life....and it could never happen to us......
I Found the following on Ships Nostalgia Site, and must credit their members Dave Beaumont and Willie Mac for details and picture of the plaque from CHUSCAL.

A Plaque to the memory of the five lads of the Fyffes banana boat "Chuscal" who were lost overboard in 1966. According to a newspaper report at the time the "Chuscal was 520 miles South East of Newfoundland. Around midday the lads were out on deck attempting to lash down a loose horsebox when a huge wave engulfed them and swept them all overboard. A crew member described the seas as mountainous with waves over seventy foot high. Because of the atrocious weather conditions the captain was unable to turn the ship round to search for them. Thank you for the welcome Castleman. Gulliver sounds very interesting and his knowledge has led me to finding out just some small amounts of info that count. Thank you.
Reading a lot of your posts I am begining to see why my Dad loved the sea so much.
I have a vision of Gulliver proped up in some old inn on a bar stoll in the corner of the bar telling his stories to all that will listen. If I knew where that bar was I would be there to buy your next pint.
Sorry Gulliver if I got that wrong?
Your camaraderie is so warming, I think I'm going to enjoy this voyage.

    Regards
    Kevin
