I remember setting out a brand new awning on the boat deck of one ship, the next thing full of holes, the mate was ropeable.

I was a cadet with Fyffes and one of the jobs we had to do was to change the scavenge valves on the Kawasaki MANs'. Nice clean job!

Hi Steve, I remember seeing your name on the crew lists but never had the pleasure of sailing with you. Yes, very common occurrence on with the MAN engines that were in the Fyffes fleet. I too sailed on Darien and Davao. Seemed worse for scavenge fires but they did have that additional issue of 2 stage scavenge with those massive interstage valves. I was on the Darien for the major engine room fire. Interesting times.
