HMNZS Manawanui
BBC news reporting that HMNZS Manawanui has struck a reef, gone on fire then capsized and sunk off the coast of Samoa. All hands managed to get off and all rescued.
It is a specialist diving and survey ship and was conducting a survey of the reef at the time.

Re: HMNZS Manawanui
Think someone has a bit of explaining to do over this incident. First NZ navy ship lost since ww2.

Definitely embarrassing to be sunk on the reef you're surveying.

Hi Ivan.
At least when they get back to NZ they can put that one on the chart. One other thing is that like most countries today they are very short of seamen, I'm thinking that after this fiasco there will be a few more .I suppose I can count myself lucky, I sailed to Samoa quite a few times, the reef may be a pile of pipi shells the natives throw away.

Re: HMNZS Manawanui
Hi Tony.
I should think hey would put both, but it is a puzzle as the NZ Union Co ships had been sailing there for years, and the natives surely would have know about the reef, though a dugout isn't deep enough to have hit it.

But Des, we are talking about our Kiwi Neighbours, you know with the way they speak it is possible they confused Reef with reap.
Or as they would say rape!!!!

Re: HMNZS Manawanui
Think put in another post ,flying with wife Perth to Auckland and just after filling in the landing card, the girl on other side of me asked “ have you got a pin “ , now I am not in the habit of carrying dangerous weapons on my body , so said “ no sorry don’t have “ ,turning to the wife knowing women carry all sorts of funny thing in their handbags I said “ do you have a pin for this lady? “ no she said also. The young lady gave me a funny look and asked someone else and received and filled in her arrival form. I felt like a meanie on not lending he what she requested. JS.
