Re: the mini budget up-date
Hi Colin.
I think it was 45, I remember opening the bedroom window up stairs and shouting to my brothers that the snow was up to the sill, it wasn't of course, as I opened the window and the built up snow fell off. But we did have around five feet on the ground, along with the frozen toilet, my Dad had forgotten to light the candle in there.

Re: the mini budget up-date
It was back in about 1948/9 maybe when in parts of outer London we had snow in early June.
In about 1979 it was so cold down in Kent that some cricketers wore their PJ under their normal cricket clothes.
Re: the mini budget up-date
To change the subject slightly can anyone think of a newly promoted Captain, Chief Engineer or Chief Steward who got into such trouble in such a short period of time! I remember a newly promoted Chief Steward who lasted three days but the others proved more durable!

ha ha Des, we had a more high tech solution, our toilet was across a lane and exposed to winds. My old man made a lamp from an old golden syrup tin, with a wick from a miners safety lamp as well as the glass from the same, suspended by a bracket from the water incomer pipe. Lift the lid of the syrup tin, fill with paraffin and light. Never froze up although you could get hypothermia if you sat too long.

Hi Tony.
I don't like to criticise todays youth, but they don't seem to think of the simple solutions these days.

If half of what I read in the news about UK politics is true then you appear to be in a bit of a mess.
But how did it get to this state?
Not all from bad management, there must be other factors causing the problems!!
But Greta has popped up again, saying Germany should not consider coal but continue with the nuclear power stations that are just about stuffed.
So the German population have a choice, be killed off by Co2 from the coal or from a nuclear leak.
Re: the mini budget up-date
Natural gas is the third highest energy source in Australia (after oil and coal). It is used by power stations for electricity generation.
Re: the mini budget up-date
My wife and I were talking about the new electric cars, ours has an old 1500 cc engine that hopefully will do us, providing oil doesn't run out. and she said as they are building all these electric charging stations all over the place, where are they going to get the electricity? If everything is going to be gas, all the new houses here are having gas put in.

Re: the mini budget up-date
Down here in Victoria Des we have a company who only build electric only homes.
We have a new estate being built, some 250 homes all electric only.
But as you say, where will the power come from.
As to charging stations, they are few and far between here, no one is prepared to build them as the availability of EV is so low there is concern they will not be profitable.
Re: the mini budget up-date
After much speculation Kwarteng has just been sacked by Liz Truss as she desperately tries to protect her own position.
He spent only 38 days as chancellor.
