Two and a half stripes was the turning point in the RN for a naval officer from Lt./commander to full Commander with 3 and the brass hat to go with it . Usually then destined for higher things or your Daddy held high ranks or had done so years before. Maybe it was why passenger companies wanted to know what Daddy did for a living trying to emulate the Senior Service. I used to smoke them when younger . Cheers JS
