Re: Merchant seaman history
Hi Wendy a bit off thread but just a bit of humour with you mentioning Dalrymple Street. Many years ago it was said policemen were given the job of constable for their brawn rather than their brains, they were big men to keep the natives in check on Scottie Road. The story was, believed to be true,a donkey dropped dead on the corner of a street.A policeman arrived and took out his note book to make his report, what is the name of this street he asked,Dalrymple Street he was told. What is the name of the next street along he asked, thats Kew Street sir.He did no more than put the note book back in his pocket lifted the donkey up and carried it along to Kew Street where he dropped it back on the ground and wrote his notes.
Regards.

Re: Merchant seaman history
He does not seem to have died during WW1 due to enemy action as far as MN, though early days still. He may well of died prior to WW1 or indeed later ? He may well have served using a different christian name, different services or as said survived. K

Re: Merchant seaman history
Hi
Sorry I don't really know, in our search I know my great grandad was Thomas Murphy, who was a merchant seaman , all I know about his dad was that he was called Benjamin and he was said to have been a butcher.
Thanks
Wendy
