After retiring from Cunard,this ex Sea Captain was
touring around in his Rolls Royce,He stops outside
this country pub,and gets talking to this old gent.
Thats a fine car you have there sir, he says.I worked
for Cunard all my life,and thats what they gave when
I retired,well sod me says the old fella,cause i worked
forcunard all my working life,and all Ive got is this old
bike!!!!!!!!

Yes mate thats right,I am an old b....., my wife keeps telling me so. However at that time we were preparing for D Day,the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and didnt quite realise them Frenchies was going to come and take us over. I am still here in France all these years later just hope the war ends soon.

I wish I had a £ or a $ for every time I went to the Market Diner in the years you mentioned and earlier. I would now be rich....... It was our first and last call on runs ashore and draft beer was 10 cents a glass I recall and ice cold of course,great in NY summer heat. The only other place I recall I am afraid is the seamans club just round corner, other than of course the bright lights of Broadway & Times Square,, Jack Dempseys bar,the Hawaii Kai and a few others. We also docked down near Greenwich Village Pier 42 which was also great/

:eek:dont forget the Ward Room, round the corner from the Diner and across from the pocket park, the toilet was up a very steep flight of stairs, I remember a fight in there and one guy came tumbling down . pretty bruised up from the fall :eek:I used too park my car across the street there when I picked up some mates of mine ,after I emigrated.fun days.:cool:

I went to that Diner...the Market Diner it was called. Two eggs and fries with a coffee 50c. That was in the early fifties and there was a Chinese Laundry on the bottom of 59th. St. We used to use it for cleaning and that (what else ) and buy stuff that had been left bu other seamen...dress shirts etc. 25c each.
Good times then. We used to go up to 3rd Ave and buy nylons off the carts there, 25c a pair, and sell them in the UK for 35s. The pound was 4 bucks then.
