    Default Regent tankers

I wonder if there is anyone around who sailed in any of the Regent tankers - Lion, Jaguar, Caribou, Tiger? Or even the old El Mirlo!

    Arrow Bowring's Tankers....

An interesting group of old tankers there ,gents.. the kind that we would probably have seen many times during our time at sea and taken for granted, just going about their business, increasingly dwarfed by their ever larger tanker successors..yet a home over the years to thousands of seamen....(We do tend to get achingly nostalgic about ships sometimes....n'est-ce pas?)

My late father (he crossed the bar in November 2001) was Captain Michael (Micky) Ogden... He was with Bowrings from March 1942 till forced redundancy in early 1985 when the new owners sold the last ship... I was lucky enough to go away with him on several ships - Forth Bridge, London Bridge, El Lobo although I was probably really annoying as the captain's sprog...

Sailed as child passenger on Regent Hawk 1957,Regent Royal 1960 (twice) and Regent Eagle 1963 UK-Trinidad.Memories of swimming in pool with water levels changing as ship rolled, being dangled over the side by galley crew, being given cigarette aged seven again by galley crew, meals being lost as they were being carried from aft to dining room in rough weather, flying fish on deck, looking out of portholes at night at stars, seas washing over decks in heavy seas, drifting whilst engine problems were being fixed-for a child a wonderful adventure.

My father,Tom Gill, sailed as bosun on several Regent boats and others. Fell ill in Vittoria on Sydney Bridge aged 65, came home dbs. CT Bowrings awarded him a lifetime pension even though he'd never paid into one. He died 1987 aged 80.
