I signed on MV Trinculo 26 August 1963 at Newport as EDH. Unusually for ore carriers we sailed with a full cargo of coiled steel from Llanwern steelworks and headed for Savonna in Italy. Homeward bound we called at Bone, Algeria for a cargo of iron ore. Many French ships there at this time evacuating the French and their possessions. Discharged at Middlesbrough where, in those days, 'ladies of the night' slept aboard. I was saving myself for the girl of my dreams but the guy and his companion in the next cabin kept me awake all night! Then down to Pepel in Sierra Leone for another cargo of iron ore for East Moors steelworks in Cardiff where my old man worked. In the middle of the Bay of Biscay the big ends packed in. We spent almost the whole day fixing a tow to, I think, the 'Atlantic' but when a salvage job came up she cast us adrift and we had to wait for the 'Pacific' which eventually towed us to Cardiff where I paid off on 6 November and caught a taxi that took me home and into the arms of the girl of my dreams.

I was Third Mate in her 1971-72. Three trips from Glasgow to Monrovia and Murmansk. And I lived in Newport!

did one trip sometime in 1971, joined her in south shields, loaded iron ore at nouadhibou, paid off in liverpool. got a DR for conduct, not a nice person in those days.

thanks for that ivan, probably am a lot nicer than i was then. as you say, man of few words, in the MN scheme of things, just a small blip on the radar, unlike my father and most of his brothers, james stoddart (butch) hardy, cook 1928-1968, eddie (sinbad) hardy, engineer, bill hardy, cook, thomas hardy, cook, killed on the fishpool at syracuse 1943, father (butch) torpedoed on the swainby 1940, uncle bill, torpedoed 3 times, got a touch of shell shock, so the govt sent him coastal minesweeping, go figure. all west hartlepool men, and proud to be monkey hangers before anyone starts!

Also sailed on the greenbacks 'J' Levenpool, Swiftpool, Wandy, longest trip 22 months on the Wandy, sailed with a few W. Hartlepool men, most could take the monkey joke in their stride. A few on here have sailed on the Levenpool, a slow, slow slow ship but did a few trips on her, all short ones.
