Forth and London Bridge

Hi just joined site to see if any of me old shipmates are still around. Did me cadetship with Bowrings. Was made redundant when company sold to Marsh and McClelland in 1977. Did me last trip on the Trinc and paid off in Immingham. Dougal,2nd Off, was what they called me in them days.

Sailed in the S.S.Sept Iles ,1958 /1960. Bowering Management . Anyone still around who sailed in her ?

Joe weren’t you a friend of John Eggerston who passed away a few years ago. If am getting the names mixed up sorry . But if correct how did he finish up on tugs. Did he go for a Foreign Going Tugmaster certificate rather than Master F,G. As believe he started off in the liner trade. I did call at his abode once in the old bad girls school in W.B. But could get no answer to the bell. When he died it seemed inappropriate to ask such Questions and I haven’t seen your name on site for some time to ask. As say hope I am not getting mixed up with who I think you are. Best Regards John Sabourn .the subjects name maybe Eggleston as is nearly 70 years since I knew him , and he got the nickname of Eggy. Aye, and the duct keel was held together with Fiber Class , same as her sister the London Bridge.

The Chief Officer took me for a tour of the duct keel on Forth Bridge, long way down.
A real eye opener as he showed me a ruddy great crack in one of the ribs or whatever they are called, very disconcerting it was.

after the 61 typhoon off japan i was second steward on the mv riseley an all aft accom vesssel we had cracks in front of the accom you could get your fingers in.....the wind was one of the highest recorded ...it was brown trowser time no prob .....that always made me think in later years of the derbyshire .....the accom just snapping off.....cappy

Mark, think it as the Forth Bridge last sailed with your Dad and family, Your Sister married Stevie not long after, that was the last time saw your Mum and Sis.got made redundant and went separate ways from then.

#25 That would be Thistlebond great stuff any repair if done correctly would last for years, on most ships I sailed on the seawater pipes were held together with Thistlebond and glass fibre tape.
