    Default Clean her up

Not sure if you heard the news in UK.

P&O runs two companies, P&O Uk and P&O Australia, both owned by Carnival.

The Oz one has for a number of years used old ships from other companies such as princess, refurbished them and used them on cruises out of oz ports.

This year one arrived from the northern hemisphere and is one of the newer ones.

Pacific Adventurer was in Post Melbourne in early November and we saw her there.
From a distance of the other pier she looked fine.

Last week on her way to a cruise around NZ she was told by NZ authorities she would not be allowed to berth in any NZ port.
    She was declared as 'dirty'.

There had been a bit of rough sea close to the NZ coast so the proposed cleaning of the hull could not take place.
Attached to the hull were limpets, muscles, and some other sea creatures, all of which the NZ authorities said could contaminate local waters.
They have a very strict protocol on this.

This is the second P&O cruise ship denied entrance to NZ ports for the same reason, first was about four years ago.

The guests have been offered a $300 on board credit, not much good if you do not drink or want to buy any goods from the on board shop.
But if they wish to cruise again with P&O Oz they will only pay half fare!!!!!

Sad thing is one couple on the way to be married ashore where family live, and a good number of others had family waiting to see them there.

Have not heard of any other shipping company being refused entry on such conditions.

Only the good old DM which was for some time not welcome there.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

I was told by a friend that Carnaval UK are going down the same route as P&O ferries UK. Looks as if they are tearing up employment contracts. No doubt completly ignoring employment laws and just doing what they like. Maybe if passengers voted with their feet and not Cruise with Carnaval lines they may have a re think.
And people wonder why trade union membership is on the rise again.

According to BBC news Carnaval have withdrawn the threat and have agreed to work with Nautilus the T. U. representing the workers.

I wouldn’t particularly call Nautilus a hard core union Vic but more of a discussion group. Loathe at most times to take hard action. Started life as the mnaoa (merchant navy and air line officers association.) went to numast ( national union marine and air and sea transport.) now Nautilus and more in line of an agency advertising work. Unless have changed their tactics will be no match for a hard shipowner. The only way they will be able to fight them is relying on the maritime law which the shipowner has the opportunity and the wherewithal to have changed to suit . You only have to look at today’s manning scales to see how successful they have been. I look on normal shipping today safety wise as just another accident waiting to happen.JS.

The problem is that carnival head office is in California, not UK.
So any agreement between crew and the company will be made there.
Any crew member not happy can leave, Carnival will have no problem getting new ones.
The Philippines provide them at a rate of knots.

The possible problem for Carnival UK could be they will not be allowed to use British ports if they do not comply to employment laws.
Doubtful mind given what went on with the Dubai owned P&O ferries.

P&O ferries got away with it, despite supposed outrage from British Govt. so why shouldn't Carnival give it a try.

Heer in Oz if a new crew member is taken on then they must be paid under Oz laws.
But if taken on in a foreign one then they can be paid by local rates.
No doubt this company will find a way to fix it.
