and then there were five - carnival imagination arrived on 14.09.2020 for breaking up - that has to be a first - 3 cruise ships from the same company - carnival fantasy - inspiration and now imagination within weeks of each other and 2 others from another at the same time monarch and sovereign - strange times indeed

monarch - sovereign - ( pullmantur ) - carnivals - fantasy - inspiration and imagination at the breakers - as stated before - unprecedented sight of 5 ships - side by side - all in the space of a few weeks of each other - dont think this has happened before

Like many well past their use by date.

Princess, a division of Carnival which sent those five to Alang has just sold the Sea Princess built 1994 and the Sun Princess 1995 to unknown buyers.
Three new ships on the way to replace them.
Both were only about 2,000 on board whilst the new ones will be around 3,500.

elsewhere i have posted the latest development regarding cruise ships having arrived at aliaga - monarch x monarch of the seas and sovereign x sovereign of the seas - arrived with in days of each other this last week - carnival fantasy en route plus one other - a lot of ship companies are selling off their fleet - ie - rotterdam - amsterdam - veendam and maasdam are heading to fred olsen - the astor - marco polo - magalon - operators have filed for bankruptcy - and the amount of cruise ships in lay up due to the pandemic has caught everyone off guard - our focus on ship spotting will take on newer pastures - namely the breakers - if this thread continues Attachment 30426Attachment 30427

If Olsen have bought the HAL ships then I wonder what will happen to their current fleet - which is 'old' in cruising terms. Perhaps Alang will see a few more arrive.
CMV who as you say have gone into Administration didn't actually own all the ships they operated.....but you can see some of those destined for Alang or other breakers as well. Sad period for the industry.

Many of the ships are sold on then leased back.
It gives the company some money to use on other newer ships.
Like all ships they have a useful life span and that is all.

About 20 in all will end up at the Alang beach.
Some of them are getting on a bit from the youngest at about 20 to a couple well over 30years old.
Most no longer economical due to changing passenger demands and economy of scale.

I did a Med cruise on the Costa Victoria a few years back. Good feeder, but buffet grub was canteen culture with overweight Americans loading up and wasting most of it. Entertainment was pathetic with routines I'd seen better performed by the 'Girls' aboard a ucl boat. She's gone to a better place on Alang Beach.
