Not so quiet on the western front
Hello,
Further to the Roald Dahl debate ..................
In May 1933. 90 years ago, the Nazis burned between 80 and 90 thousand books. In the weeks that followed books were confiscated from Libraries, Bookshops and Private Collections.
One of these incinerated books was written by Erich Maria Remarque. Its title was, "All Quiet On The Western Front."
We need our imagination and no one should take control of it. We may dislike what an Author has written and disagree. That is our democratic privilege. It's also the democratic privilege of an Author to put his/her thoughts on paper.
90 years ago the Book Bonfires were a stark warning to the World. We must be acutely aware of what is happening now to our Literature. Some might say that it's a joke and only Woke. I say that it's a dangerous precedent towards the Thought Police*

Re: Not so quiet on the western front
Brenda.
I use our library extensively, and the other day was passing a section of books when one caught my eye, it's title was 1932, being I was born in that year I grabbed it and took it home, it was all bout the year 1932 in NSW, turmoil galore as it was; as you know in the middle of the depression. It's the sort of book that Hitler and his mob of fascists would have burnt, but it was only history which we all should know about.

"I wholly disagree with what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it".
Only if it is from a left tree hugging think tank, otherwise you are a neanderthal and don't deserve to have an opinion or enjoy life as we all once did, free to talk and have opinions.

Re: Not so quiet on the western front
'All quiet on the Western front' was made into a movie many years ago.
There is a new version on Netflix, made by Netflix, just won an award at the BAFTA's in London.
Best German made movie was the class it is in, not sure if it is in English though.

Happy daze John in Oz.
