That collision cost me my job on the old Franconia.[ MY FAULT.]
We followed the Stockholm out of New York, Thick dense fog, I was in the nest on look out, I could not even see my own ship. so being a bit daft in those days , I climbed down the mast, the door opened into the Pig, and I was having a pint with Joe Finnegan.
MEANWHILE, the collision occured, up ahead, The Ille de France got there first and did the rescue. I think 52 people were killed, someone off the Andria Doria ended up on the Stockholm
I also remember the movie Star, Ruth Roman, [ I always fancied her,] was rescued..

Phone calls to the nest to tell the look out man to keep a good look out. No answer,
Two Masters at Arms arrived in the Pig and escorted me to the wheelhouse, and Captain Donald Murdo MacClean had me logged and sacked. quite right too.
I didnt think she would last so long. that was 58 years ago. I wrote about it in Seafaring Stories thread `FRANCONIA`
    Cheers

Thanks for reminding us Brian, that we were all a little "cavalier" in our approach to our jobs in those far off halcyon days.

The MV Doulos was only retired a couple of years ago and was I believe about 90 years old, so still many a good tune played on an old fiddle.

Brian re. The Stockholm collision. A little italian girl was pitched from the andria doria. Onto the stockholms deck. She was speaking italian hysterical but the sweds. Couldn't. Understand here thinking she was one of there passengers. They carried Spanish. Deck crew they interpreted and found out what happened she was with her sister in her cabin. I have a book of old ship collisions around the world. Cheers. B.kelly

Thanks for that Rigger, I knew someone had been thrown onto the Stockholm but after 58 years had forgotten who.

Crewmember Killed, Another Injured in Cruise Ship Rescue Boat Accident
BY MIKE SCHULER ON NOVEMBER 1, 2014
One crewmember has died and another injured in an accident involving a rescue boat onboard Princess Cruises’ Coral Princess.
The accident occurred last Friday, October 24th, in Colon, Panama.
According to a statement from Princess Cruises obtained by Cruise Law News, the two crewmembers were inside one of the Coral Princess’ two rescue boats performing maintenance work on the hull of ship. When the boat was being raised back onboard the ship with the two crewmembers still inside, one of the cables that raises and lowers the boat parted, causing it to drop back into the water.
Both of the crewmembers were taken to local hospital where one of them died from injuries sustained. The second crewmember is reported in stable condition.
The crew member who was killed has been identified as Husnan Fauzan.
The other worker was Bosun Steven Bagshaw who is currently still in the hospital in stable condition.
Princess Cruises is one of ten cruise brands owned by Carnival Corporation. The company operates 17 ships.

Sad news, but they do carry out regular maintaniance on theses ships.

This Ship is being promoted as a "New Ship" joining "Marco Polo".Next Year cruising from U.K. Ports.Us Old Salts are not being taken in by that one! Some years ago, another "New Ship" sailed from Liverpool called "Apollo" operated by the now defunct Direct Holidays. This turned out to be the "Empress of Canada" I rest my case.
