Brian Mate, Southampton V Liverpool container or cruise ship terminals will always be a controversial subject. Yet both our ports I think need to keep a look out at what is happening with this new port, London Gateway, at present it is likely to take both our container trades. From what I hear it will have a continental type Freeport area of considerable size, on top of it's normal container births. And if my memory serves me well, there was talk some years ago of airport seaport complex being built up that end of the Thames. Can't remember the exact details of it all, but it did mean re-claiming ground. Think at the time the government of the day knock the proposals back. But as we all know London want's London eventually gets. Maybe time for Southampton and Liverpool to work together, after all there is enough trade for both ports to share'

George I think Liverpools main trade could be with North America.ACL are building 5 new ships just for this run I doubt they will send them down the Channel and around to London imagine the extra cost there.Also Liverpool is in the centre (more or less)of the UK so much more preferred as a hub for containers travelling to the docks.Liverpool 2 opens next year this can take all the large container ships.Liverpool as a cruise port,you walk off the ship along the Pier Head and there you have The Tate,Liverpool Museum,Titanic Exibition,Slave Exibition,Maritime Museum and a lot more all within walking distance of the gangway.

Liverpool always had a BIG Liner trade, from the Landing Stage. with all the Cunard ships sailing up to twice a week, plus CPR Empresses every week, plus EDs almost weekly with Aureol, Apapa, Accra, plus Anchor Donaldsons plus the immigrant ships and so on. Ideally situated for the New York, Montreal and Canadian ports trade. The Landing Stage was always full of Liners. .then came the slump and now it is regenerating itself.
So Liverpool is Not taking business away from Southampton, just taking back what was there in the first place.

. Having seen many cruise terminals across the world. Liverpool probably is the best for just walking ashore and everything is there within walking distance.
Now New York was good, Pier 90 , five minutes walk to Broadway/Times Square. but that has gone now, the ships tie up in Brooklyn now at the new cruise terminal.and half an hour bus ride to Broadway. In Sydney if you are not on the BIG BIG ones like the` Wotsit of the Seas` then you go a 40$ taxi ride up the River to that new cruise terminal.
Southampton is a good walk through the Docks to get out.

I vote for Southampton as I spent too much time in Hornsby dock getting cut in half by the icy draught. Thamesport could be very similar. I know lots of interesting places close to the Liver building, but you need actic clothing to get you there.

The most interesting place (culturally) near the Liver Building has got to be the Pen&Wig in Harrington St, and heavy weather gear ain't required downstairs @ Aphrodites.
