Adelaide South Australia today at 0600hrs. the cruise ship Athena docked. At 1000hrs. a tender with 50 passengers aboard set out for Kangaroo island on a day trip. Close to the island they hit a sand bank and became stranded. A second tender with 3 crew was then sent out to tow the first one off. This also got stuck on the sand bar. Both tendres have to wait there for high tide when the lifeboat will pull them off. Great modern day seamen I think, not.
Fred Olsen have a good system with regard to on-board gratuities.
They do not charge the normal 15% on top of drinks - the price you see is the price you pay. They also don't charge your account for tips to the cabin steward and waiter. These are left entirely to you to decide who you tip and how much you pay them.
This way you can reward for good service, and I think it is the fairest way to do it.

Hi Pendenis, that sounds the fairest system yet. Royal Caribbean have a 15% gratuity built into bar drinks which at th eprice look very good, that is until they do the conversion from $U.S. to your currency.
We had the original Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. Then we had the Q.E.2 for about 40 years, and now we have the Q.M. 2. There is also I believe to be a Queen Victoria.
Today I recieved a travel brochure via the net advertising the maiden voyage 12th October 2010 of the Queen Elizabeth! Is this to be the Q.E.3 or have I missed something along the way?
John you are having trouble with the ships that where queens. Just imagine how many variations of names there would have been if we had tried to name all the queens that sailed on them.
No John you are correct mate, there is to be yet another Queen added to the list!
Dont how many more they can operate, seems that the Luxury of Sea Travel is here to stay! Great News!

Les its great to see you back posting mate, you have been rather quiet!
Is all OK !
Cheers
Thank you for your concern Vernon and everything is really good here. Thought that it would pay to retire from posting for a while before things got out of hand. Things seem have been sorted out so will gently enter into the banter. Being a shy and timid type of person it might take a while.
Les, I like your thinking but somehow a ship named Queen Aggie, or Queen Rachel just does not have the same ring to it. Though that may not be the most appropriate word to use on this occasion.
If we named the cruise ships after all the 'Queens' that have sailed in the Service we would all have a cruise ship each. Mike:p;):D
P.S. I'm glad to see Les back as we come from the same town and went to the same school, but we get on with everybody 'coz we're nice chaps, aren't we?:o
