Hi Keith just hope the cruise companys dont use the fixed tips to pay the catering staff as the lads earn very little as it is I have been told that when the filipino crew start off on princess cruise in the galley they earn $100.00 a month and do 10-12 month contract
It would appear there is a lot of misinformation regarding wagews to crew on cruise ships, though I agree there may be variances between north and south hemispheres. Yes a lot of philipinos work the ships now, the average wage for them is up to ten times what they would earn at home. An apprentice in the galley may well be paid a low starting wage and contracts run from 3
to 10 months depending on what the crew member decides on. I have spent a lot of time talking with crew on these ships and the catering crew in particular are very happy with wages and conditions.
That is right John, I too have spoken to my Filipino Staff and last trip he had over ten years sea service so not all that bad. You cannot put them on the same wages as someone from UK. the cost of living in the Philipined is a hell of a lot cheaper than in the UK. I think Tony who has just gone to live there has found that out.
The ones I have met have a verry good standard of living.
OK some of them do six month sometime ten month contracts, what did we do? anything up to two years and sometimes beyond.
So they do have a good deal. I see them when they pay off, All the gear they have, New TVs and all kinds of electronic gadgets. On the ships they have two berth accommodation, they have cheap crew bars, and duty free whisky etc,
They have an Internet Room so they keep intouch with their families daily, sometimes we never got mail from home for months.. We had nothing like that in the old days.
In Cunard they can share a cabin with their girl friends on board.[ maybe their wives at home dont know that] it is more than we got.
So I do not feel sorry for them, we had it tougher and did not whinge.

Morning All,
tonight on channel 4. 8pm Dispatches. A report on working conditions on Cruise Ships.

So very true Brian. During the olympics a number of our guys over there thought the cost of living was very cheap. What they forgot was that the basic wage here in Oz is almost twice that of UK, and the exchange rate is good. All domestic prices are a reflection of costs in cluding wages. For those who now crew the ships they are earning a fortune in relations to wages in their home lands.
On Yahoo News here today in the Philippines, after banning for one year Filipina Maids from working in Saudi Arabia one of the richest Countries, for abuse and low pay, the Philippines Goverment have negotiated a new Pay Deal, for new Employees, all they were paid befor was 200 US Dollars a Month = £123 a month for any amount of hours, less than £30 For 7 Days, could work 72 hours for that or more, new Pay Deal is 400 US Dollars a Month, 1 day off a Week and 8 Hours Rest. £246 is still a pittance for the hours worked, and no more withholding of Passports so they cant leave.:th_thth5952deef:
Just come back from a cruise on OCEANA, the tipping was £3.10 per day per person, this, I thought was divided between all the crew including the staff you don't see, ie laundry staff, galley staff etc, but apparently they all had wage increases when the new tipping policy came into force, the only staff that didn't get a pay increase is cabin stewards and restaurant waiters, so this tipping is shared between them, although you are at liberty to opt out of this system and tip individualy as you see fit. I didn't think that £105 for a 17 day trip was to bad, plus we tipped the cabin stewardess extra as we thought she deserved it.
We now have the 'Carnivalk Spirit' calling Australia home for the foreseeable futre, about four years so I am told. Cruise from $88.50 per day is fantastic value and the line is obvioulsy attempting to attract young families from the promo I saw. Howver even as I enjoy cruising this is one I will not go on. far too big, up to about 80,000 tons is Ok after that forget it. This one looks like and is being promoted like, 'Butlins on the ocean'.

It was the greatest year for Piraeus Port as far as the cruise ships arrivals are concerned!
105 ships visited Piraeus. Many of them used Piraeus as home port or port of beggining for their cruises! Never such a big amount of cruise ships visited the biggest Greek passenger port!
