I first met Bob Hollis 49 years ago,me a wet behind the ears brand new EDH,and Bob a seasoned AB.We hit it off straight away.I had flown out to Rotterdam to join Iberic, and Bob had been working by.We duly signed on,and sailed for Aussie via Capetown,as the Suez was still closed at this time. From Aus onto NZ,then the east coast USA,back to Kiwi, and then back home via a few European ports.
Bob and I hung around during our leave and he stayed at my parents place in Clapham.Having run out of money,on the phone to Shaw Saville, and we both signed on Cretic, sailiing for Fiji, andNZ.On returning home I resigned on Cretic, and Bob went on his own merry way.February 1968 I was alongside in Auckland,as was Gothic.I believe this was the first trip after the horrific fire of the trip before.Anyway who should come aboard but Bob.After sinking a couple of beers we went over to Gothic and on seeing the damage realised how vulnerable we all were at sea.
This was to be the last time I was to see Bob.Moving on 25 years,I was perusing another MN site I came across a posting from Bob on some matter or another, and sent a reply. We kept in touch for the next 18 or so years, last 8 years by phone.Bob and his wife Emma had been quite succesful potters in Southern Ireland, and then moved to France. We spoke right through his illness and he had been humorous and defiant right throughout that time, with many a reference to Fiddlers Green? His son emailed me with the sad news of both Bob and Emma's passing. All I can say is Go Well old friend.and I will raise a glass of Jameson in your memory,on the anniversary of your crossing the bar.
    Your old friend Grant.

#27, Hi Keith. I am still in touch with Jean.
She is keeping well, and often asks about the site.
