Stan Mayes

I have just read on Ship's Nostalgia the very sad news that Stan Mayes passed away on 21 August aged 93.
I am sure that many members here will be acquainted with Stan and will have been inspired by his war time exploits.
I have exchanged messages with him many times in the course of my research into the wartime history of U-C and other ex B&C companies. He was always most willing to help and a gentleman in every respect.
I never knew him personally but came to reguard him as one of my heroes.

Very sad. Stan was a good friend of mine who I met up with regular at Tower Hill every year. I knew he had been receiving treatment, but was high spirited las time I was in contact with him. I was just about to contact him about the Donald Owen Clarke memorial, as he served with him on the San Emiliano, leaving the ship not long before it was lost. He was also a survivor from the Viking Star sunk the same month and survived seven days in an open boat.

I used to ring stan every few months and we would have a good laugh I know he was in bad health for some time a fine man and I class as a good friend I will miss him our parting words over the phone every time was good to here from you john you have made my day I love the scouse accent stan a true seaman rest my friend.. john.

I am so sorry to learn of the passing of my friend Stan. I have corresponded with him for some years now and he was always willing to help and share his experience - nothing was too much trouble for him.
I was aware of his illness but this is still a big shock.
My sincere condolences to Heidi, Tom and all of Stan's family, he is at peace now with Elsa.

I will miss Stan and his experiences. A very fine sailor and gentleman who I am sure many will hold in great esteem, I know I do. My condolences to his family and friends and may he find fair weather and gentle seas on his voyage to peace and eternal rest.

I didn't know Stan ,but of course had heard of him through SN at times!
May I send my Condolences to all of his Family and good Friends,and hope that the sad loss will not be too devastating to them all.
It is always a shock to loose anyone but with Faith I know that time will heal all wounds!
Stay strong all who know Stan,and may he now sail away to better places and perhaps recall the good times he had whilst on this Earth!

stan spent many years at sea and went to work on the Thames on the jubilee his mate hade the wheel bringing the queen up in the royal barge he could have gone but never he told me he was busy that day that was stan he had lung cancer for a few years before passing he was torpedoed he told me in getting into a lifeboat never mind food and water the bond was broached and booze and fags were the order of the day he said we used to wave ships past knowing they would get another the next day in the convoy he joined the MN the day before war broke out that was his luck but a big part of history went with him although we never meat face to face as soon as I rang him he knew me right away a man you may only know once in your life a no nonsense seaman and boson for many years good night my friend.. john.
