Ian McEachern Blue Star Line
A close friend, Richard Hutt of Tamworth, NSW has advised me of the passing of our shipmate Ian McEachern, an engineer the Blue Star line who succumbed to what we used to refer to as asbestosis. I have been awaiting more detail to add to this message but Richard has had a lot on his plate with the passing also of his dear mother Vera. The following will tell a story of once again how this site has brought together old friends and memories in this rapidly changing world.

John Rendle.
I sailed with John on the Montreal Star and was talking to him at the reunion mentioned in the thread at the weekend in Wellington. John is with the Harbour Board at Lytleton. Tim Noble was also at the reunion, although I didn't happen to see him, mainly as I wasn't acquainted with him.
I had recently sent some videos to Richard Hutt for Ian to see the the ships he had sailed on. Ian was delighted so when I saw Jacyn's post and opened the link I sent it to Richard Hutt to pass on to Ian who had just returned to Tamworth from the New Zealand Blue Star Reunion. From that Ian joined our site and contacted John Rendle.
I know that Ian was very happy to have had this contact made possible by John and Jacyn and in respect of this, thank you both.
Ian was aged 71, had a large turnout and his coffin was draped with the Red Duster.
May he rest in peace.
Richard

Richard it is sad to loose a good mate, and so young, but that disease as we know takes no prisoners. Another member fo the family of the sea has gone to Fiddlers Green. Condolences to the family.

Re: Ian McEachern Blue Star Line
Thank you Vernon. Here is an exchange of emails between my friend Richard Hutt. To date I have not heard from Dorothy McEachern but should I do so I will post her message here.
Cheers mate.
Richard
From Richard Hutt to RQ 22December 2013
Thank you so much for doing that for Ian. I told Dorothy when she came to dinner here last Thursday and she was most pleased for you having done that on the MN website. She is having trouble coming to terms with things but I am sure she will be in touch with you when she is up to handling the many messages and emails she has had to contend with.
From RQ to Richard Hutt 16 December 2013
I have just opened the MN website after a couple weeks and have put together the following and posted it onto the "Crossed the Bar" Forum there are 10,000 members, many who will see this and may well remember Ian.

John, Here is an email to me from Ian and Tim Noble was at the Blue Star Reunion in NZ.
Richard
Dear Richard,
Quite a coincidence, as I had just returned, in fact one hour before Richard telephoned, from the BSL reunion in Wellington. I have joined the group and answered the thread and look forward to a reply or maybe other contact. I sailed with John a couple of times and had a chat with him at the weekend.
The reunion was excellent, my wife and I had a wonderful weekend and, as you would know, there were endless tales told or retold (a sign of age) and friendships renewed.
Thankyou for keeping me in mind regarding Blue Star Line.
By the way Robin Vestey, the great grandson of the founded of the line, flew out from the U.K for the event, combining it with business, and he was quite emotional when he saw the number of people in attendance (154).
Regards,
Ian.
