The Sailor Boy: Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1861) |
http://z.about.com/ |
He rose at dawn and, fired with hope,
Shot o’er the seething harbour-bar,
And reach’d the ship and caught the rope,
And whistled to the morning star.
And while he whistled long and loud
He heard a fierce mermaiden cry,
“O boy, tho' thou are young and proud,
I see the place where thou wilt lie.
“The sands and yeasty surges mix
In caves about the dreary bay,
And on thy ribs the limpet sticks,
And in thy heart the scrawl shall play.”
“Fool,” he answer’d , “death is sure
To those that stay and those that roam,
But I will nevermore endure
To sit with empty hands at home.
“My mother clings about my neck,
My sisters crying, ‘Stay for shame;’
My father raves of death and wreck,-
They are all to blame, they are all to blame.
“God help me! save I take my part
Of danger on the roaring sea,
A devil rises in my heart,
Far worse than any death to me.” |

Re: Tony Wilding (This really shook me )
I am truly saddened to hear this news as you are all rather like "surrogate" fathers to me. May he rest in peace and his family find comfort in his memory.

Re: Tony Wilding (This really shook me )
Tony Wilding apart from being a sad loss to his family and personal friends, will also be a big loss to this site. He is another piece of the jig saw of our era of the Mercantile Marine and his inputs to this site will be sadly missed. He also I believe showed the traits that we all had about going to sea on the adventuruous side of life even at the age he was he carried on in the same vein. I said a long time ago that it is sites like this that will be used hopefully for the next generations to look back on what went before them, although it will be a different breed as was our predessors it will help to complete the picture. Gone Tony but not forgotten, keep sailing a straight course. Best Regards John Sabourn

Re: Tony Wilding (This really shook me )
I re read some of the posts , there was a definite uplift in Tony's mood when he moved to be with Annie , I think his last fourteen months in the Phillipines were very happy ones
