    Default Peter Leonard

I was informed this morning by Mark Leonard that his father Pete had passed away.
Pete and I were deck pantrymen on Caronia in 1957.

So very sad to learn that our shipmate, Pete (Bruno) LEONARD has passed away. He, like me, had once expressed an interest and knowledge of the manufacture and distribution of British sauces and pickles (see post 'A meal fit for a King') and had at one time been an employee of 'Epicure Pickles'. Although I never met him, from his posts on this site I had formed an impression that he was a fair-minded, decent man who had respect for others and loathed injustice. His posts, though less frequent in recent times, were not given to controversy and although he wasn't afraid of expressing an opinion, if it was called for, I dont recall him ever being aggressive. Reading his posts, few would imagine that as a young man he had been a very good boxer. I shall miss him.

To his son Mark and the family I offer my most sincere condolences. Rest in peace, Pete.

    Roger

I have joined so that I can say thank you to all of you who have left kind words about my wonderful dad. He was a very proud & brave man who never complained about his illness & tried to protect my brother & I from the horrors of it right until the end.

We sat by his bed all day on Saturday until he told us to "bugger off". I joked with Mark that he would wait until we weren't there & sure enough we had a phone call from the hospital at 11.20 on Saturday night.

I know how much he enjoyed interacting with his fellow merchant navy men & often talked about his time at sea. We are now intrigued to know why he had the nickname Bruno. If anyone could shed any light on this I'd love to hear from you.

Bless you all for your kind words for a lovely man who will be sadly missed by many. xxxx
