Alan Young R.I.P.

My mate Alan Young died on friday the 23rd of september 2011. He died from asbestos posioning after a long illness, Alan worked at BP shipping working his way up from catering boy to catering officer,he only ever sailed with BP and was with them forabout 15/17 years untiil the redundancies in 1986.We fought BP for compensation and it was a long time comming,and after all that he lost his life.He said to me just before he died to put this on the MN website for all you ex seaman to get yourselves checked for asbestosis

It is very sad to loose anyone let alone a good Friend,and may i convey my sincere condolences to the Family ,Friends and you on his passing!
So many of us older chaps are now getting to that final point in our lives,and i sometimes sit and wonder how long it will be before all the oldies of the past will be no more!

May Alan Young now rest in peace,and may the Winds take his sails to the far off places i know he must have so enjoyed!
Bon Voyage Alan i know you will be missed by your Family and Friends!

R I P Alan. Yes I can remember working with asbestos several times at sea, I can remember brushing the dust off my clothes with my hands.

In many ships the cabins were insulated with asbestos, unseen, under the formica bulkheads.
The vibration of the ship at sea shook a lot of dust into the atmosphere of the cabin to be breathed in whilst you were asleep.
Not a lot of ship owners will tell you that.
RIP Alan, not a pleasant way to go.

our shipmates are getting few in number as the years past so fast ,I was on a few B.P. tankers so will get checked. When the last trumpet shall sound and all sleeping souls are waken, Like the morning sun across the waves you will be called to the last muster to rise and shine in haven Alan Young R.I.P. untill we meet again.

Hi Tony,

I never sailed with Alan, but am so sorry to hear of his passing. Ironically the job I do now brings me into contact with numerous sufferers of asbestosis, so I have an idea of the suffering that he would have went through.

It sends a chill through the bones knowing non of us are immune to this condition. Hope your keeping ok mate I'll pm you shortly.
