I cannot remember dates but on one occasion we had to leave the ship due to a list in port caused by ice and were guests of the Air force at their base and whilst there an emergency was in progress with a large bomber which lost an entire engine that fell onto the town of wooden houses. The miracle was it dropped between houses and into a pile of builders sand causing no damage. I was 2nd cook and baker at the time.

Hello Anthony Bird, my name is Tony Long, and you and I seem to have a very similar history, let me explain, BIRD is one of my family names going back to the 1400s, I was at the training ship "Vindi" from 15-11-1954 to 23-12-1954 my discharge book # is R621369, catering, my first ship was the MV Port Victor. (pantry boy) I was on the Dominion Monarch (bathroom & wine waiter) for 2 trips from 21 May 57 to 18 Jan' 58
I was on the Tantallon Castle from 3 Apr 59 to 3 July 59 (one trip only, BR steward) and I was on the Beverdell for 2 trips, from 23 June 1960 to 28 August 1960. I ended my career in the merchant navy as 2nd steward with Shaw Savill, and came out to New Zealand to live. I'm not too sure if our paths ever crossed, but they certainly came very close. Wishing you all the best Anthony. kind regards Tony Long

Hi Tony, I believe I was ahead of you all the while, I went to the Gravesend sea school and then joined the Durham for a long trip to Australia in 53 followed by the Nottingham same trip but spending time in Tasmainia waiting for apples. Since posting my list I have remembered other ships I was on for sure so I will try and amend it my date of birth 29/6/1936. I have been around a while.
