Notes: I served my apprenticeship with The Scottish Lion ship repair and Engineering Co. part of Clan line Steamers in Glasgow and was allowed to complete the last year of my apprenticeship at sea. i was sent to Southampton to pre sea school run by the Union Castle in their offices in the Docks in that city. After three weeks I was appointed 6th Engineer on MV King David. I was given a letter of introduction to the Chief Engineer of that fine Vessel, but was told under no circumstances was I to approach the said Chief Engineer but to report to the Second Engineer as he would be my boss. The Second like myself also came from Glasgow, ( Just up the road from where I was born ) he told me to get into a boilersuit,
gave me a torch and told me to get under the plates and trace all the pipework systems and them demonstrate the various ways to transfer oil, pump bilges, run compressors ect. Welcome to sea going engineering. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
