The longest trip I ever heard about on a Bisco charter was down to Cape Town and that was a one off. The only cargo I ever carried on an ore carrier apart from ore was scrap iron to New York and could not even load a full deadweight cargo as the holds were too small to carry the weight as compared with ore. The iron ore ports best known were Narvik , Murmansk, Oxelosund. , others up the Baltic I can’t remember at the moment, Monrovia , Sfax in North Africa. Others of course will probably remember in my dreams tonight . 6 weeks was a long trip to most. Real hardship !!! A good job at the time if that was what you wanted . I hadn’t been married long so eased my conscience . Especially as when first married disappeared for 6 months , Gwen flew across to Hamburg for 3 days , and then I disappeared for another 6 months. A lot of women would never have entertained the time I spent away. But it was a livelihood and everyone was in the same boat as they say. Cheers JS
Maracaibo is in Venezuela on the Atlantic side so more than likely was it. But who knows maybe there is an iron ore port in Chile on the Pacific side. Will have a look in Nories and see and let you know. JS.
Just a quick look and the only two Victoria’s listed are in Canada and Nigeria. JS
John, as far as I recall Chile only has a Pacific side, Straits of Magellen were disputed. Did most of the WCSA ports, but in tweendeckers, so never loaded bulk, even guano was loaded in bags, copper, lead in ingots, don't recall any bulk ports in the 50's, but if any it would probably be Antofagasta, or as it was known by the scousers as Aunty f... faster.
Carved in the mountain above the town which can be seen for miles is "Vive La O'Higgins" he was the Irish general who led the country to victory over Argentina and later became one of its presidents, marrying a Chilean noble lady of great beauty, and those of us who have been to Chile are aware the country has an abundance of such ladies. Nearly every town in Chile has a Plaza O'Higgins.
