    Notes:
Just want to know if anyone knew of my grandad Kenneth Hall back when he was in the MN, I never got to see him and just looking for stories or info on when he was serving.

My grandma has told me stories that he use to fix the ship if it went over rocks in the sea and he use to weld and fix the breaches.

Also he had multiple certificates in:
•Certificate of attendance in merchant navy officers fire-fighting course (1968)
•certificate of attendance in merchant navy defence course (1966)
•certificate of efficiency as lifeboatman (1968)
•certificate in merchant ship steering (1966-1967) onboard the ‘Regent Falcon’

For more info on Him if required you will need his CRS10 which holds all his Service Records,
This is his Seamans Pouch Link. which will hold Basic Info.

Well Jak, the information you have given suggests that your grandad was a deckhand from the information you have given and not an engineer. DHU denotes Utility Deck Hand : EDH denotes Efficient Deck Hand, he would need both the steering certificate (minimum 10 hours steering the ship) and a Lifeboat Certificate to gain his EDH Rating. The other two certificates may have been company requirements for particular ships he served on.

Sorry but alas I may be the bearer of bad news, a DHU/EDH would not be sent over the side to weld any tears in the ship's hull if she went aground on rocks. If going aground on 'rocks' the vessel was likely to need more than a welded repair whilst on the rocks and in any event that task would fall to a suitably qualified engineer. If she did refloat then she would probably have assistance of tugs to take her to a repair yard. Going aground on sand or other similar substance would be unlikely to breach the hull and she may be able to refloat using her own power.
