Hi Stephanie,
My great uncle was master of the Empire Storm at the time, George Welbourne Stephenson. In April 41 they encountered and sunk a u-boat with gunlayer Alexander Cairns. George got an OBE and Alexander got a BEM medals. In May41 the Empire Storm in convoy HX-128 and was sunk by u-557 with 3 souls lost. Prior to this ship George was on the ss Hartlepool and was hit by e-boats but beached after having the stern blown off. After the E Storm he was master of the ss hartlebury which was hit in convoy PQ-17 by U-355 and sunk. He survived but passed in 1944 from his injuries.
Regards Bob.
