Hello my name is Tim, I have joined this site on behalf of my father, William Henry Croft born 1932 in Fleetwood Lancashire, he served in the Merchant Navy from 1948 to 1954 between those years he had served on various vessels mainly oil tankers I think,
I have been trying to research the ships on hopping to get the history and photos of them for him.

All of the above details were filled in by Bill's son

    Hi Tim.
Did your Dad go to the Vindicatrix sea school? have a look at the second page in his discharge book it will tell you. I was at sea a few months after he started.
    Cheers Des

    Hello Brian,
Thanks for your reply, according to my father's discharge book he was with the TILAPA from the 5th of June to the 6th of July 1954, it would be very interesting if you both were on board at the same time.
    Cheers, Tim.

    Hi Des,
Thanks for your reply, I can't find anything about him at any sea school in his discharge book but on pages 5 and 6 with the heading "particulars of training courses" is mostly blank apart from a rubber stamp at the bottom left showing his A.B. certificate number issued in Fleetwood 21/08/1952.
    Cheers Tim

    Hi Tim
Remember not all the young ones of that time attended a Sea School, there were many who just joined on Spec so to speak.
I think some on here will possibly tell you the way they started without going to Sea School.
    Cheers

PS Reason for no Entry in his Discharge Book ??

    Hi Doc,
Thank you for your reply, from the list of ships that I have already posted there are three that I can't seem to find their official numbers WALLOWA, ESSO ROCHESTER, and the GERVAIS,
plus the Gervais has a prefix of T.E.S. stamped in his discharge book what would that mean? also, I am trying to find out what happened to the S.S. SETTLER according to dad's book he joined her at Liverpool in July 1953 but the book is stamped with "voyage not completed" for some reason. I have asked my father about his service but with his condition, he just gets so confused now. Cheers, Doc, and thanks again.

    Wallowa Off Number 24488 1943

Esso Rochester Off Number 510338 1943

    Gervais Off Number 244651 1943

SS Settler Off Number 166273 1939 Broken up in Hong Kong 1959 after sailing as the Margalante for a short period

"voyage not completed" Means exactly that ,he signed on and never actually was aboard the Vessel. This happened to many a Lad in those days .
He would have just then waited to sign on another!
