Re: Arthur 'Jack' Sweeney
Lewis
I certainly am not disputing any of what you post ,would just like to clarify (actually ask) about Tommy Steele.
I recall a long time ago we did have a discussion on him, cannot now find that Thread but it was very old!
Anyhow I have again searched the Internet, and for the life of me cannot find anywhere that says he was with the Winchester Castle. There is his Blog that has him with Cunard in the 50's ,don't think he was at Sea too long.?
However going back to the Thread I am on about,i do also recall that (I think) that he was mentioned as being with the UCL at some time??
I have also looked at the NA at Kew and there is no record of him where we find most other Seamans Records! I looked under his real name as well,as I am sure that would have been the name he had to use on joining the MN.
As said Lew this is purely asking a question. Possibly there may be others who could clarify ??
Thanks
Cheers
Real Name: Thomas Hicks
Birth Date: 17th December 1936
Birth Place: London
Steele worked in various jobs, including a brief period as a merchant seaman
When on a ship Steele was serving on docked in Norfolk Virginia USA, he heard
Buddy Holly and fell in love with rock and roll,
It was, of course, while plying his trade as a young merchant seaman on the Cunard liners that a teenage Tommy first heard rock ‘n’ roll in its homeland of America, being captivated by Buddy Holly when he saw him on stage in Virginia, and it was on board ship that he was taught to play the guitar by Mauritania waiter and fellow ‘Cunard Yank’ Dick Campion.

Cappy, i went to gravesend sea school, and it was claimed he attended there, but who knows. I sailed with another guy on a Ellerman boat, when i say sailed, we signed on and he was a brilliant guitarist and singer, after 3 days he signed back off as he had managed to get a job in the music business, i cannot remember his name, so will never know if he made it, kt

The Green Goddess the Caronia used to do it's annual lay up in the Gladstone Graving Dock I was having a pint in the Royal just along from the Caradoc somebody came in and said Tommy Steele was down by the Gladstone gate looking at the Caronia as it was one of his old ships.Maybe he was playing the Liverpool Empire at the time.
