Hi Des,
The ship continued on to Newcastle, Australia and was boarded by authorities to investigate the cause of the fire,
the galley boy, a Birmingham lad, was taken ashore, I never saw him again and don't know what happened to him,
but I felt sorry for the guy, we found out about the "dear john" after the fact. The rest of the trip continued with blackened
bulkheads till we arrived back in the UK.
Cheers,
John
Very true, very true, Ivan, I have myself scrubbed many galley decks and soogied and painted the bulkheads, but the forementioned, offending bulkheads
were not in the galley, you see, and whit the heck am I supposed to know aboot blistering paint, I'm jist a wee boy.
Eh Baa gum, John, I've just slapped my wrists (as I know you can't reach from there!) for not reading the posts correctly,
Hi John.
In those days before Computers, and in my days nearly before cameras, the Aussie police might have told the skipper to preserve the evidence for the UK authorities, as if it was done while at sea, he would be subject to British justice, ten lashes with the birch and slices of tallow on toast for three months.
Cheers Des
