    Hi Carol.
On January the 9th 1940 the ship Imperial Monarch of 5,831 tons was hit by bombs and gunfire from aircraft 10 miles from Scurdyness,it does not indicate in my book whether she sunk or not, I'm assuming that she did.
Supplement to the London Gazette 11 June 1942.
On the 11 of June 1942 the King on his birthday has been graciously pleased to present to Horace Crossland Chief Steward in the Merchant navy the British Empire Medal Civil Division.
I can only conclude that it was for bravery when the ship was hit.
    Cheers Des

    Hi Vernon.
I looked at the index in the back of the book but didn't realize that I was looking in "Damaged but not lost," you are right she was damaged but not lost. Horace Crossland would have received the medal for some action he took at the time.
Will have to be more careful in future, Thanks.
    Cheers Des
