#7.. Wasn't Fyffes. Was a managing company in London who managed 2 ships for Chowgule Steamships Bahamas. Fife ship management may have managed other companies ships also. Chowgules were a fair sized Indian Shipping company most of which were under the Indian flag. The only two I knew were the Maratha Endeavour and the Maratha Envoy. Anyhow the same Chief was ex RN who started as a stoker and gained a commission and when came out of the Navy laid claim he had been the oldest serving lieutenant. Commissioned Naval Officers if in the right branch of the service received a certificate of Service either for Chief Engineer or Master on coming out of the service, the only peculiarity with the Master one, that I knew of was that it didn't allow them to go master on a coastal passenger ship which I found strange, apart from everything else I found strange about the whole set up as few on the deck side had any idea re cargo work, or in fact navigation. The deck one I sailed with was an ex lieutenant Commander who had some weird ideas about merchant shipping, but had the usual gift of the gab which suited some. The Ch. Engineer one I found ok, but I didn't have to work with him, he was a real card. Lapped up the life style but as said don't know about the other side. Cheers John S
