This proves this RA number does not have anything to do with Dad! I am not sure if this is good news or not! Dad was repatriated to the UK from Suez in July 1945.

Revisiting the various posts as I do occasionally. this one grabbed my attention - if only for the confusion it creates! I have never had a discharge number for Dad.


As I understand it the service number 304559 is for Dave Amosa man who was on the Samspeed at the same time as Dad and was posted by his son Dave Amos.


Your post of 19/11/19 where you give details of D Casey b. 15/06/19 Ireland service number R255333 fascinates me as Dad's CRS 10 claims he was born in Ireland - but we have proved he was Glasgow born 14/4/1922.


Your post of 20/11/19 where you give details of D Casey service number 1135036 RA is definitely not Dad. Forces War Records gives him as being injured/captured in May/June in North Africa. At the time Dad was on board Sampseed as a jun engineer.



As yet another piece of the jigsaw, there is a D Casey service number 3315812 6HAA posted MIA at Singapore. There seems not to be any further information about this one. However, As Dad was in the RA according to his marriage cert 30/12/1940; was definitely at Singapore 14/02/1942 vanished and turned up in the West Indies late in 1942, he would seem to be a good candidate!


I was always good at jigsaws so I am not going to let this one defeat me!

This man was called Dan Casey and was serving in Normandy area in 1944.

And I haven't! Dad's army papers finally arrived electronically this morning!
Dominic Cunningham joined the HLI in 1939 and transferred into 3/6HAA. He was posted missing at Singapore but returned to his unit in Ceylon 4/1942 but went AWOL almost immediately - his army records show. Also reading through these it would appear that he met a friend from Glasgow in Durban in June 1942.
So now I have a start and finish point for his travel from Singapore to Ceylon and narrower date fields for his trip from Ceylon to Durban and Durban to Trinidad.

Looking for mmore bits of the jigsaw now!

It's official! In my first major breakthrough in some years, Dominic Cunningham Casey and Dominic Michael Stringer are one and the same man (proven through DNA).

Having had success from one end of Dad''s war history, it occurred to me that about a month back I was in contact with the national Archives.

I used the online chat at National Archives and found an extremely helpful operative who did some research for me whilst I stayed online. She confirmed that there is not a CRS 10 in the records for Dominic Michael Stringer or Dominic Cunningham Casey for either birth date we have. The conundrum is, as I have a partial copy that was given to us whilst in Cardiff in the late 1980's where could it be now? I have tried to attach the file below.

Any Suggestions?

First off that PDF does not open, so please try again make sure its a seperate File on your Computer .
I am not sure but think that the info you have on that File possibly may be in the Southamptom Maritime Section of their Archves. Email them with a copy of what you have , and ask the Question there!

Finally, I cannot get the original of Dad's CRS 10 to upload. there is loads of information on it that I just do not understand. Dad joined the British Merchant Navy in Canada in 1944. Perhaps some kind could could pm me with their email so I can send it for interpretation?

So is there or is there not a CRS10 ??

My Brain Boggles at all this Hazel ! LOL

As the CRS 10 is in the name of Stringer, it wont be under Casey - we know the CRS 10 was named to Stringer.

Here is the reply I gave Hazel on another site -

Hi Hazel,
In 2001 the records were transferred from the Registry of Shipping and Seamen (Cardiff) to TNA Kew.

The CRS 10 for Dominic Michael Stringer should be held at TNA Kew in piece BT 382/1734.
The record should be held in a block of surnames - 60 to a box so they would need to go away and check through the whole file.
