With a ships name like or similar to Dementia I bet you got plenty of rude remarks. I was on a ship called Dartmoor and the usual catcalls of ships passing in the Suez was after “ Any Geordies on board ? “ was “ How long you in for ? “. Cheers JS
PS after the first call the usual answer was No we’ve been fumigated .JS

Thanks for the replies, yep it certainly did attract remarks.

Been trying to get in touch with Fawley but is sending me around in Circles, I contacted them a few years ago, but that was for any information on the vessel logbooks and few other crew members but drew a blank.

John, with regards to (mis)pronounciation,I remember my old shipmate Gulliver telling me on his ship DERBYSHIRE)-the cargo ship of 1966,not the bulker sadly lost in 1980- that the name caused no small amount of trouble to shore VHF stations in foreign ports, especially the Far Eastern ports, where ,in a Thai port anchorage, the ship nearly lost her berthing slot when she perhaps naturally couldn't elicit a response from the bridge watchkeeper who wasn't replying to a frantic voice calling the DEBAUCHERY !

No recollection of that, considering we usually loaded up the Arabian gulf not many would have disclosed that they worked for Zim Line.
I am in another group mostly Bibby lads I will ask around and see what I can find.
If it is the same guy we are of an age I am nearly 76.

Sorry Geoff, just been told I have the wrong name the guy I was thinking of was called Burden apologies.

No problem James, I’ve always found the only names that stick are the ones you drank with or the ones you clashed with, I clashed with Stan many times, but probably learnt a lot from him, he was a big Rangers fan, which reminds me of a Second Officer telling the Oldman on a Sally Ferry I was on “ Your Scottish, what do you know about football’ ………
