Very sad news, OZ Batsman Phil Hughes has passed away from his injuries doing what he done for a living and had a great future ahead of one so young. It makes you think of the dangers all sports that we enjoy carry such a degree of danger. May he R.I.P. Terry.

How unlucky was Phil Hughes to be struck where he was,I imagine the head gear will have to be looked at again.Sympathy and condolences to his family and some sympathy must go to the bowler also,imagine how he must feel.

Very sad for his family and Australia,

Then I got thinking,
What was the ball doing at that height.?
When I played cricket at school we were taught to bowl and hit the wickets.
A wicket is.......... "The tops of the stumps shall be 28 in in height," or two feet four inches.
so the ball was over Five/six feet high to hit him on the side/back of the head, at least three plus feet higher than the stumps
So what kind of Bowler was the other fella.????

Brian, Fast bowlers in todays game, Are super fit athletes a little different than 40 50 years ago. And as Jim has said its a first in the modern game with the protective head gear. But inevitably they will have to look at the safety factor again. Given that it was a short pitch bowl by Sean Abbott I cant see what other precaution could make any difference. I feel for Sean Abbott as I understand it the guy is considering never bowling a ball again. I honestly think this was just a freak accident, And not an accident awaiting to happen. Terry.

Thanks for that Terry , but somehow I still cannot think why , if he is bowling to take a wicket , why is the ball so high above it, a good bowler, no matter how fast he is, or how super fit he is, should be able to hit the wicket unless he was trying to disable the batsman otherwise he would be wasting a ball.

Indeed I was watching the News Yesterday late here and heard of this very sad News!

May I convey my Sincere Condolences to all the Immediate Family and all his good Friends on this sad occasion!

He was a top class Player at his young age and had so much more to look forward to!
A terrible and tragic but freak accident, let us just pray that this will not happen again!
Cricket Australia are looking at how they can now improve the Helmet's, lets hope they come up with the goods for all future Players safety!

Brian it's called a bouncer they have been doing it for years.Don't forget the Bodyline period,that's when it started. Hi All.
Yes a very bad incident one which even the helmet couldn't have stopped, it was reported by the Dr in charge that Phil's injury was to the neck, the ball hit and burst a main artery in the neck which caused massive bleeding to the brain, he had no hope of being saved.
RIP Philip Hughes.
