Help needed with identifying a uniform
Can anyone help identify the uniform in the attached photo? The photo was among my parents' papers so I assume the man was one of their friends. My parents were born in 1913 and 1914 so it is likely that this person was also born around that time.
Thanks for any help you can give me. Margaret

Re: Help needed with identifying a uniform
As already said. if you could make out a purple background on the gold braid that would signify he was engine room. The badge is not Merchant Navy but a company badge. The actual uniform is not M.N. As the top brass button is not fastenable . Have seen this on uniforms tailored in Bombay and some tailor has mistread the drawing he is going by. JS

Re: Help needed with identifying a uniform
The only genuine M.N. Thing is the braid. Which in many cases was often worn Illegally. As the diamond represents the wearer holds a certificate of competency for that rank. The actual photograph could be like others posed for at some studio the duds being supplied by them. JS

Re: Help needed with identifying a uniform
Must disagree JS SORRY
But that Pic seems to be taken on Board a Ship as you may well have seen, and i am sure that it was not posed for, well in the sense of trying to put one over anyone!? Just my opinion anyway!
As said that Cap Badge looks similar to the one i have posted, it has the letters S W N Co ??
Cheers

Not too sure here but on a really good look at the Background Land it may well be that the Ship he was on was taken in Gibraltar! ??

Re: Help needed with identifying a uniform
The hat badge looks like an X not sure if that is a company one or just for show.
Could it be that the man is dressed up for some show or other, maybe a model for some uniform company?
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Help needed with identifying a uniform
#5 MN uniform taken aboard ship, but not some dude posing for advert, otherwise the uniform would fit better and not have a bulging pocket on RH side. SWNC could be HK Swire and Warren (not sure about the Warren but rings a bell)
