    Default M.N. war vets badge

Always remember my M.N. War vets badge dropping through the door after making the application online from Market Rasen My old Mother in Law was sat in the kitchen, Her father was in the Atlantic Convoys and spent most of his 85 years at sea from the age of 14 years. As I opened it along with the badge was an inscription from the M.O.D. explaining why the badge was awarded. She asked me what I was awarded that for. OHH The 12 month voyage I done if you remember Mother she stopped me in my tracks You weren't in a war like my Father and you never carried a gun or anything, I wasn't even going there with her, I knew why I had received it and I wear it on Merchant Navy day every year and the last time I wore it was at Jim Brady's funeral R.I.P. Who most new him from this site typical old salt and I had a lot of respect for him. My sons said I bought it on e-bay Those of us that hold them know why we received them that's all that matters Terry.p.s. I checked on e-Bay and still do they are very hard to get hold of, And if you think of the British Armed forces and todays Merchant Navy. Supporting them in a conflict any where in the world I cant see many more ever getting handed out, If you hold one look after it and as in my case when I go it goes with me Terry.

    Nice post Terry.
I must be one of the few to have both the standard veterans badge and the MN one, the former for foreign adventures during my time in the RNR and the latter for the same during the dayjob. I've never worn either as it's not really my thing, but it's nice to have them all the same as a memento of times and shipmates past.

Jim, I am of the same view as to when I wear it, Merchant Navy day 3rd September. I go to the local Cenotaph at the five lamps on 11/11/11 every year well known in our area to pay homage to the local men fallen in conflict. It took my old man and his 6 brothers over 40 years years to get there other brother Leonard,s name engraved on it. Why because he was M. Navy. He went down on the Viking Star in 1942 and the council argued it was for armed forces only between the 6 of them all passed now they got there wish. Always wear it then and lay a special wreath of poppy's dedicated to him. Apart from then as I say any seaman's funeral I can get to. Regards Jim Terry.

Hi, Received my Veterans' badge courtesy of MNA some years back. Wear it on my Legion ball cap daily. Very few people know of it's meaning.

Shame but that's life today! Cheers, Eric

I wear my MN badge Federation issue 1954 every day and my Vets badge (Suez '56) on appropriate occasions. It's nice to keep the memory alive of those who gave so much for so little appreciation. People do ask questions and it's nice to educate them about the past (and present) and make them realise we still live on an island. Give it a try Jim, children are inquisitive and it's nice to talk to them and their parents, who think everything arrives on a lorry.

My MN Vets badge is worn every day on my coat.
An SAS man told me to do it.
You wear it for the ones who didnt come back and it reminds people what it is about,
I have had many comments from strangers who never knew any thing about it.

A very happy birthday, Eric. all the very best to you.
