Help With Naval Cap Badge Relic Identification
Hi,
I found this brass, enameled cap badge a while ago whilst walking the river in London and have been unable to find out anything about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated (I was unable to post pictures on this thread so I have linked to them on Flickr below).
Many thanks,
Charles

Re: Help With Naval Cap Badge Relic Identification
Nice find there ,it may be worth a penny or two .
Looks like no Crown on it so possibly some old London River Craft badge, would be rather rare though by the looks of it.
I am sure there will be someone here who may know ? I seem to recall seeing this badge in the past but where???
Good Luck
Cheers

Re: Help With Naval Cap Badge Relic Identification
I can only find one company with that house flag/funnel but it seems to have a blue M whereas the photo appears to be a red M (unless it is Rust/discoloured) The company was called Maclay & McIntyre of Glasgow

Re: Help With Naval Cap Badge Relic Identification
There was one with there ships registered in London.
Moss Tankers Ltd (H. E. Moss & Co), London
Henry Moss began business in 1840 as a coal merchant in Liverpool. A London office was opened in 1882 and in 1885 the company bought a new steamship and gradually began changing the company from a coal supplier to an oil fuel carrier. Moss & Co continued their shipbroking business and purchased many old ships which they immediately sold on for further service or for scrap.
In 1913 the company branched out into the dry cargo tramping business with Sefton SS Co and lost four tramps and two tankers during the Great War. The whole tanker fleet was laid up during the depression years until 1934 and by the outbreak of WWII the company owned ten tankers and lost three to enemy action. The fleet was rebuilt in the 1950s and in 1964 the company was sold to Cunard SS Co and managed by Brocklebanks as Moss Tankers Ltd. Moss Tankers and the Cunard group were purchased in 1971 by Trafalgar House and in 1991 P & O purchased the shipping interests of Trafalgar House including the last Moss tanker

Soaking in Coca Cola for a couple of hours and cleaning with a soft tooth brush may reveal more detail.

Thank you everyone for your help! Moss Tankers Ltd certainly looks like the closest match so far.

Re: Help With Naval Cap Badge Relic Identification
I have a feeling as said earlier by Ivan that it could be an American Line ,as looking at some of their Badges there are a few that have that look with Letters and the White Square??
Just my thoughts though!

The only reason I mentioned Matson, as along with Grace Line of the USA they were our competitors on the WCSA and their badges never had a crown on top of the laurel of leaves, so was the first company that sprang to mind and of course could be totally wrong, as like most of my vintage the little grey cells ain't what they used to be. Most British companies managed to incorporate the crown at the top of the laurel.
