I was working out off Wellington NZ in the late 1950s. There was A Tailer there, that made clothing for seamen. They where known as MONOWAI BLUES. we got pants A jacket and he through in a cap. They where very heavy grade cloth. I wish we could get clothing like that now days.

Now you can but designer Jeans in so many outlets.

Most of the younger generation wear them with great pride, not concerned about the price they pay for them.
Knees rotted away, pockets torn etc.

If only they knew, you can get ones like that from the local tip for free.

In the 50s,Jeans were not generaly available in the shops.
If you spotted someone wearing these "odd" looking trousers
then they were most probably Merchant Seamen.

Think lt was called John Ollie John. I remember buying a midnight blue suit with a gold fleck there. Think it’s still in my wardrobe with confetti in the turnups.

Saw a pair of Jeans in a department store the other day.
So much elastic in the fabric, but you would need it to get them on, bit like the 'Drain Pie' trousers of the 60's.
Much of the clothing of today has very little style compared with what we knew.
But the price of some is beyond belief for what it is.

Maybe the drape coat may make a comeback along with the Bill Haley kiss curl!!
Platform shoes, or winkle pickers, your choice lads.

I had a pair of jeans in 1956, they were probably hand-me-downs from my brother, so they must have been on sale in East London shops before that. I'm just going by old photo's. I only wear jeans these days, in fact I always have, and they're still Wranglers. It's only when getting dressed up, like on a cruise that I don't.
I remember Buying lots of Big Yank, or Wrangler jeans in the states to flog in NZ, we could treble our money doing that, denim jackets and pants.
I went ashore in Fort Lauderdale in my Burtons suit once, it had been spewed on loads of times and cleaned just as many times. A salesman in a big department store said he liked my suit and looked at the label, he was overjoyed at the label saying "Burtons of Saville Row London". He begged me to sell it to him, and eventually I did a swap for about ten sets of jean jackets and pants, all wrapped up in paper and string. Plus a set of Big Yanks to wear back to the ship. What a result, I think I got the suit in Burtons in Barking.

    Hi Johnny
I got all my suits from Burtons while I sailed from the UK, many of the Burton shops had a dance hall on the second floor, might have been a sociological move as, if a bloke looked a bit inferior he could sprues himself up with a suit downstairs.
