Victoria, you can buy designer jeans in most department stores.
For some outrageous price you can by a pair with the knees worn out torn pockets and in some instances split side.
I threw a pair like that away and now realize I could have sold them on e bay for a very good price.
Just last week i went to Big W in Katoomba, wanted another pair of Jeans, saw these on sale for just $10 Stretch Material as well, had like faded washing marks all over them and like worn through at places! Designer ! Well i just walked out! LOL
And before Designer Jeans there were Shorts! ;):)
I always look to get good value in everything I buy. I can get two pairs of jeans (about 4 colours available) for £16. Good material, quite heavy and dont shrink. Bought some 18 months ago and wear almost continuously with no signs of wear.
Would not pay any extra for inferior quality materials with some little logo or badge added, or deliberate rips etc. I expect mine to protect me from the weather.
In the 60's London was the place to be and carnaby street was the place to get your designer gear.
As a 2nd trip cadet coming from a country boy background I thought it was all fantastic and one day I ventured into carnaby street where I was persuaded to go into a male boutique by a stick thin sales assistant who then persuaded me to purchase at an exhorbitant price a pair of flares. On returning on board and wearing them that night I drew many comments from my fellow ship mates, the least cutting being along the lines of " mutton dressed as lamb". They were so cheaply made that within a month they were falling apart and were consigned to the garbage bin. For a number of years after that Millet's and army and navy stores were my go-to shops for outer wear.
Nowadays TKmax, Primark with the occasional visit to M&S are sufficient for my sartorial dress sense.

P.s. perhaps my visit to carnaby street was driven by the desire to see the live female nude models in the window of one of the women's boutiques there as reported in the local news. No chance though as the street was rammed with male oglers around that window.
In the early 50s 1953, I bought in the States a wrangler Jacket and dungarees for 6 D llars, @ 2$ to the pound.
£1.10s for the jacket and £1,10s for the dungies. I still have the Jacket , hardly ever wore it,
Hi Victoria.
Down here in Cooma it's the Salvation Army stores, which has just about furnished and clothed half of Cooma, I have all through my life shied away from secondhand clothes and still do, but we have bought some nice arm chairs from there; young people buy new furniture on time payment then decide to shoot through to another town, the Sally's end up with the goods.
Cheers Des
WE donate used good quality items, clothing and other, to the local Op shop.
It has to be one of the busiest shops in town.
Run by the local church with all monies raised going to charities, all the staff there are volunteers.
