    Default Bill Crompton

    Hi Charlie.
I am Bill Crompton and I was an engineer with B&C.
I spent 3 weeks at Pre Sea school during October or November of 1964.
There was a guy there called Charlie who had family from Malta. I think he was from Manchester.
    Would this be you?
    Bill

Default Clan Urquhart 1942 to 1965

Clan Urquhart was built in 1942 for the Med during the war. She was my 1st ship. Straight from pre sea school at Glasgow to join her in Hull in 1963. I have photos of the starboard LP cylinder when it jammed on a broken junk ring and bent the con-rod. We compounded it south of Dakar then loaded in Capetown. Back in Europe we took it to Blackwater estuary to mothball while Wallsend slipway cast a new cylinder. It sailed to Formosa (Taiwan) for scrap. The fourth engineer that took over from me to sail East fell in the crankpit while warming the engines through with the turning gear and died. I have been looking for photos of Clan Urquhart for a long time. Anybody got any? Ken

There's also a good history with fotos on the Merchant Navy Officers .com site.
Enter the site, then click History tab,(small blue writing under the title),then scroll down to Clan Line in the Company Histories..It's a big site.

    Default Clan Line.

I had reason to join the King Henry not that I wanted to but because I had a problem on my previous ship.
The pool had a job to crew King boats in those days because they were tramps, anybody with a "Good Book"would'nt go anywhere near them.Anyway after being out of work and getting knocked back everywhere I went I had no option but to take the "King Henry".
Clan Line had just taken over the King boats, this ship was absolutely filthy from top to bottom, the Chief Steward said, the Catering Superintendant said "If this ship comes back in this condition your sacked"
This was music to my ears,I wanted the overtime I brought that ship back after 6 months as though it had just come out of the ship yard!!
In those days you only needed £50 deposit on a small house and I had that after that trip on the King Henry,so the present house I live in now is down to Clan Line.
    Regards,
    Jim B

    Default Clan line

I also sailed on a number of Clan Line ships, both as a cadet and a junior engineer. The Clan MacGillivray was my first ship, in 1973
