I remember the Southern Harvester and the Southern Venturer ( factory ships ) used to be tied up at various times (out of season) at Middle Dock South Shields. Salvessens transport ships used to run to South Georgia with stores etc. during the season and probably outside of the season when required. If you can get a book called I think the deep south written by Capt. McCoughlin ( he is probably dead by now) he was the working mate on I think the Venturer, and master on the transport ships at various times, until he threw one of the owners off the bridge so I heard. Before he died he was living just outside the Leith area somewhere. John Sabourn. Salvessens were a Norwegian Company.
