Chapman and Willan 1958-1975

I was on the Grainton in 64/65, Manchester to Rosario, B.A. then to Japan via Port Elizabeth and Singapore, then Canada and finally Panama, Curacao, La Rochelle, London.

The ship was O.K., I was Engineers Steward, the Chief Engineer was a Piss head, tried to get me demoted to Boy Rating, Skipper wasn't having any of that, I was also dining room Steward, the old man and his missus got looked after. When I paid off I never went to sea again. Took up another career and stayed thirty years.

Does anyone remember an AB from Manchester called Clem Yates. For some reason he loved Chapmans and sailed in quite a few of them. Clem was quite a character and I sailed with him on the Manchester Port where we got into a spot of bother. He died a few years ago RIP Clem.

Was on the 'Nurtureton on the infamous trip from Barahona to the Thames in 51/ 52 when we ran out of food.
Twice came close to mutiny! Lived mostly on haricot beans and sour bread and the fruit we brought aboard.

Alec, over the years I have often thought about Clem Yates because he always stuck in my mind as a cracking seaman, always with a smile, great teacher, great yarns and as you say, quite a character. I put out a search for him on the original forum but to no avail and yesterday, on joining this newer forum, I was astonished to see your request for anyone who new him. I was an apprentice with Chpmans from 1952 to 1956, sailing on the Scorton and Frumenton and then 3rd mate on the Ingleton for 1 trip. During my last trip on the Scorton in 1955 I was priveledged to sail with Clem and if your interested I have a good photo of him taken in 1955. I'm sorry to hear of his death but as you say RIP Clem. Hi Arthur, I was on the Riverton, joined as first trip deck boy in May 61. I was 'peggy', pluss working on deck every minute I could. Great trip, good crowd, learned a lot. I was then on the 'Demeterton', joined August " 67 " again it was a good job, unfortunatley for me I was paid off in Aussie because of " high spirts" and spent 6 weeks in the calaboose. I found the two ships of Chapman's I was on were just what I enjoyed, tramping around, I had many a worse outfit than Chapman's. Regards to you and all the 'salts' that enjoy this site. Mick

Hi Brian, I was also apprentice on the Ingleton from may 1960 till early '61 when she was sold to Chinese.Senior apprentice when I joined in Manchester was a guy called Dave Veitch from Newcastle.

hi there iwas on both the demeterton's old & new the old one was a right heap of scrap i think that's why we were sent to the hook of holland to join her iwas an EDH can't rember date's as i cant find my discharge book nicholas duke
