Default Hello evryone I'm new to the site

    Hi
My name is Stuart Smith and I worked for Brockbank from 1961 to 1965 serving as an Engineer apprentice and ended up
as a 5th before having to leave due to family commitments. I was previously a member of Ships nostalgia and made many
post re-the Company and various ships with histories attached. Ill health of my wife prevented me signing on for several years
and after her passing during Covid I tried to get onto the site again but found it very different to what had been. I am
guessing that whatever happened left a bad taste in peoples mouths. Anyway, I have decided to try and get my life back together
and found this site and am hoping that it meets my requirements and me yours. I have many images of traditional cargo ships of back in
the day and have a interest in WW1 Standards and those of WW2.
I have recently spent a boys type holiday on my own in California and visited the Jeremiah O'Brien several times in San Francisco and the Red Oak Victory in Richmond, Ca.

    Hello Stuart
Welcome to our site, what we all think is the best of its kind, as it not only Caters for Merchant Navy Topics but many other things as well.
This is in good stead for many to follow and Enjoy!
Glad that you found us , and migrated from the SN Site, which as i too know had big changes over the Years. What was once a pretty good site , has to me declined!

Anyway sorry to hear of your sad loss over time, and hope that you are sort of getting over that, but i do know that its hard!
We have lost quite a few old Members over the Years here, and a very sad time for many of us , as we all here are sort of like a Band of Brothers.

Most times we all are very good to each other, and exchange mostly good Friendships and Banter.
There are though those few times that of course there are disagreements , but like when at Sea , we sort things out , and just get on with life. Like good old Salts that we are! LOL

Will be glad to hear of any of your past experiences, both Merchant Navy and others of interest.

    Thanks for joining
    Cheers

Thank you for that warm welcome and I will do my best to post comments and images of ships with informative text.
I can't work out how to post a photograph and add text atm. Maybe someone could advise. Thanks.
I have just posted a photograph but could not add text from my laptop in the copy and paste way.
Please help me find how to add text to the image as just having an image with no information is no good to anyone.

Before I went to sea the only camera I'd ever used was dads old Brownie box camera, simplicity in it's self just point and shoot, I liked photography but had no money for a camera.
On my first trip I saw so many things I'd like to have photographed I decided to buy a camera on my first leave, I bought a German Agfa camera, like most camera's of the day
it used a roll of 120 film that took eight black and white photos, that was the start for me, had a few camera's since those early early days. The shipboard photos I have are
all from the 50's and a bit tired now but but members of that Era may find interesting, will try and follow the instructions posted but will take some time. cheers, John Collier.

    Hi John
The same with me had the family's box brownie, but then when I had a little bit of money I bought a camera of my wn I think it was called a Minolta, still only small pictures, but in those days cameras where a bit on the dear side on the wages we were paid.

Likewise with the old Box Brownie , but moved up a notch after that to one (cannot recall the name ) but recall it had a sort of Round Wand that you opened and clicked into the Camera for the Flash! LOL
What a Palava , but Hey! it worked well, only thing is the small Bulb was only good for one Flash, so used many of the Bulbs!
    How time has changed!
My latest Besides my Galaxy A12 Camera is a Minolta with massive Zoom, its truly amazing what you can see with the Zoom. Attached Lens (Not the sort that you can detach)
Great Camera . Very good Shots !
    Cheers

Hi Des, can't remember the price I paid for it and it was a good camera so, maybe a chunk out of ny pay but i really wanted to take a camera back to
sea after my leave, my first trip was well over six months and although the ppay was low, I still had a pocket full of those old white fivers, lovely jubley,
happy days they were indeed, cheers, John Collier.
