Does any one remember Captain H W White? Born 1914, Died 1969. I'm his nephew and am trying to find out who he was. Certainly on the British Progress 1957 and on the British Baron 1954 but may not have been captain by then. thanks

Captain Horrice William White
Hi Doc
Thanks for the reply.
Horrice White was born in Kent, Chatham of Gillingham. It appears that he went to the training ship Worcester and then to the British Tanker Company and worked for them all his life. I now know that he was on the Resource in 1932 to 1934. He was on the British Progress built in Glasgow in 1948.
Thanks again, all this is very interesting.
Peter

Here is his medal file, held at Kew in piece BT 395/1, which you can download for £3.50. It also gives his discharge book number which will help you obtain any further records for him.

If it is of any interest here is a little information
There is a Horace William White who signed on to the “British Corporal” on the 26th May 1941 in Southampton as 2nd Mate age 26 with 9 years sea time
the vessel arrived in New York on the 15th July 1941 sailed from the port of Southampton 18th June 1941
There is a Horace William White who signed on to the “British Merit” (British Tanker Co Ltd) in Abadan on the 1st January 1944 as 1st mate he was 29 years old English 5’ -5 ½” in height and weight was 125 ½ lbs, the vessel arrived in New York on the 4th of April 1944 from the port of Tunis sailed 12th march 1944
He appears to have been Master age 36 on the “Cottonwood Creek” signed on in Birkenhead 26th October 1951 he has 20 years service ( which suggest that he went to sea about 1931)
also on the “ Cottonwood Creek” as Master 27th November 1951 again 18th December 1951

Cpt. White
Hi Ray.
Thanks a lot! This is my man. I know he was a very short man as was the rest of his family so 5'51/2” sounds about right. I also have a letter written from Malta headed Cottonwood Creek...didn't cross my mind that was the name of a tanker. I will have to start looking for pictures of theses ships and find out what other ships he was on. Once again...thanks

To interpret the file
1939: 1939-1945 Star
AT: Atlantic Star
AF: Africa Star
PA: Pacific Star
BU: Burma Star
FR: France and Germany Star
WM: War Medal
IT: Italy Star
CL: Clasp
OLE: Oak Leaf
A cross (×) drawn through a symbol indicates the issue of that medal; a circle (O) drawn through a symbol indicates that only the ribbon for that medal has been issued. If a cross and a circle have been used then both a medal and a ribbon have been issued. An R sometimes appears and signifies that an application for that medal was reviewed and refused. The number on the far right is the actual file number that was held by the Registry of Shipping & Seaman at Cardiff and should be quoted if the medals were never issued.
Hopefully they were issued as not all these files have survived at Cardiff and cannot be issued if they no longer exist, unless you can supply a full service record and ship movement cards.
