    Default My BP Tankers

Hi there,I left the PWSTS in 71 then went to the British Star laid up in Falmouth along side the British Industry.First trip in 72 was :-
    British Mallard June 72-Oct 72
    British Argosy Nov 72-Apr 73
    British Lancer May 73-July 73
    British Commerce Jan 74-mar 74
South Kent Colledge for City & Guilds, part of BP's training for Marine Mechanic's
    British Merlin Dec 74-Apr 75
    British Curlew Jun 75-Dec 75
    British Poplar May 76-July 76
Made redundant in 76 then I joined Cayzer Irvine in 77 & sailed on :-
    King Charles Feb 77-June 77
King George July 77-Aug 77 (Laid up at the Isle of Bute)
    King James Nov 77-Mar 78
    Table Bay July 78-Mar 79
Barcelona (Table Bay renamed) Mar 79-Aug 79
    King William Oct 79-Jan 80
I then left in 1980 & joined Townsend Car Ferries,My main ship was the Spirit of Free Enterprise but sailed on a couple of others only as relief.I then left the ferries ( should say asked to leave) in 1988 after the Seaman's Strike.

    All the best

    Hello Eddie,

My old man Dave McGee was PO & CPO with BP at the time you were there.

As for the 1988 P&O strike I was on the ELK (P&O Ferrymasters) at the time. We were just about to let go when we received a message from the union to stop the ship sailing if possible. I was on the quay side at Teesport getting ready to disconnect the shore side phone line when the Chief Officer shouted me to stop and come back on board. Following the advise of the NUS we stopped the ship sailing and then got s**t on by them for the next few weeks, which turned into a couple of months.

I could tell some stories of those days and that so called strike. I've still got the badge.

Thank's for the reply & support for 88,I also have my badge plus alot of bad feeling's. As for your Dad I do not recognise the name but then again my memory is really bad for surnames.I made PO with BP & sailed from the start with Crayzy Irvine (part of Clan Line I think) as CPO.

    All the best buddy
