66 years ago today my uncle leonard lost his life aboard the viking star sunk off the coast of freetown,one remaining surviver who i keep in touch with a beutiful old guy by the name of stan mayes,R.I.P.len always in our thoughts@prayers.you gave so much for so many god bless you terry.i shall always be in your debt stan you gave my family more information than his own mother and father recieved from blue star.i hope you read this post stan it was men like you that made the merchant navy seamen.the proud men they are myself included.at the going down of the sun and in the morning we will always remember all who gave there lives.good health all ted.

RLT, your uncle was obviously very special to you and you lost a good friend. Like so many others before him he webt trying to make life better for others, something many often forget. Lest we forget.

RLT it is always so hard to loose anyone,let alone someone as special as your Uncle whom as said you admired so much!
Stan sound like a great bloke too,and it always nice to have special folk !
Hope he does raed the post one day i am sure he will be pleased!
Yes to remember the Brave souls who gave so much and really received so little,we must remember them!

Know this an old post, but would like to add my piece.

I know Stan Mayes as I have stood next to him on a number of occasions at Tower Hill on Merchant Navy Day directly in front to of the Viking Star panel in the sunken garden. A true Gentleman, whose stories are as clear in his mind today as they were more than 60 years ago.

i recieved an email of stan a few weeks ago. he sadely lost his wife elsa.stan as i said to you then mate you getting no younger. i now you have family around you stan but plz keep in touch mate you are never far away from my thoughts, they dont make them like you anymore. sincere condolences stan you a true gent mate terry scouse.

Please pass on my condolences to Stan. I knew Elsa had lost her sight a couple of years ago and Stan was unable to attend Tower Hill the last two previous years.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Elsa. Sincere condolences Stan and from all at the Eldonian. Terry, my dad sailed with Stan in the convoys and he told me more about those times than my dad ever told us. Once again look after yourself Stan, catch you later mate. ... .john doran in L-pool.

just to give you an insight into stan mayes.he went to the trouble of copying and sending me a copy of the original ships articles. m.v.viking star which my uncle len lost his life aboard.lens signature is there on the articles along with much more info. like i said a true gent. you take care stan we are all thinking of you in your grieving. may god watch over you and give you strength.terry scouse.
