    Default Wellington Star/tasmania Star

Sailed to New Zealand in early 1975. Stopped at Auckland, Timaru and Lyttelton. Great trip.Went home and join the tasmania star to take her to scrap in Hongkong or some where but got booted off by 2nd steward for playing up. But great fun for a few days.

    Hello Barry,
Just joined the site, looks good. Thought you might like to know, the Wellington Star you were on did her last voyage with BSL later in 75. I joined her at Sheerness in August we had 24 engineers on board just to get her around the coast and ready for deep sea. She was sold in early December to a Greek company and renamed Hawke Bay , Indian crew and running live sheep from NZ to the Gulf. She never missed a beat on her last voyage and we had six weeks in Sydney waiting for the sale, Consequently we were flown back to UK a week before Christmas. Great crew, happy memories.

    Default Re Wellington Star

I was Purser/Catering Officer on the Welly when she did that trip. Our outward trip was quite eventful as one of the Catering Boys Set fire to a chair in the passengers lounge and then raised the fire alarm . then we had to put into Albany in Western Australia for water. ( All this with 12 Passengers on board)
In Sydney we were at anchor in Snails Bay and as you said we were there for 6 week. The ship was sold to Greek owners with a Packistan or indian crew. When she was handed over we went to a hotel in Sydneys Charring Cross for the weekend before flying to Heathrow on the Monday.
The flight home was via Melbourne, Perth, Bahrain anad Heathrow. We arrived at Heathrow in the very early hours of the Tuesday and we were expecting to be paid off in full by Blue star but they gave us all £50 and said our wages would be paid after they had been checked at the office first then busses were provided to take us to the various London Stations.

    Hello Peter,

Well Well Well, my first post on the site and already someone I sailed with! Yes I recall the water bunkers at Albany and few other parts of the voyage. In Sydney you may recall some of the parties we had , I used to dress up as the gorilla and scare the girls. Heard from a few others on that trip. Brian Custons 3/E, Ron Gibson C/F/Eng and Peter Jenkins J/eng as well as John Anderson C/Eng who coasted her to Liverpool , he lives 20 minutes from us!

The flight home was interesting too, did we not all drink the plane dry before Perth? On arrival at Heathrow all our forwarded luggage was still at customs so I arrived home with no uniform and was requsted to join 'Auckland Star' on the 28th , so was loaned some blues for mealtimes in the saloon. Fastest promotion and demotion in BSL history maybe as it was the seconds spare jacket I wore. It was early January before all the gear got sent out , fortunatly only coasted on her.

    all the best.

    Wally

G'day Peter and welcome aboard the best site on the net. If you care to list your ships with some dates you may well get to hear from some who knew you. So sit back with a cold one and enjoy the voyage.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
